Guest Lecture on Emerging Trends in Free Legal Aid – The Road Forward
On the 24th of May, 2022, a Guest Lecture was organized by School of Law and Legal Affairs, Noida International University at 12 noon onwards in the seminar hall. On the topic “Emerging Trends in Free Legal Aid: The Road Forward”.
The resource person for the event was Learned Shri Jaihind Kumar Singh, Secretary District Legal services Authority (DLSA) (PCS)J, Gautam Buddh Nagar, Uttar Pradesh. The event was conducted under the patronage of Dr. Devesh Kumar Singh, Hon’ble Chairman, Noida International University, Dr. Vikram Singh, Hon’ble Chancellor, Noida International University, Prof. (Dr.) Uma Bharadwaj (Chief Patron of the Event), Vice Chancellor, Noida International University, Prof. Dr. Parsanjeet Kumar, (Patron of the Event), Pro Vice Chancellor, Noida International University, Prof. (Dr.) Manu Singh, (Patron of the Event) Director, School of Law and Legal Affairs, Noida International University. The Event Coordinators were Ms. Shusneha Sarkar, Assistant Professor in Law, School of Law & Legal Aaffairs, Noida International University and Ms. Lovish Minocha, Guest Lecturer, School of Law & Legal Aaffairs, Noida International University. The session was anchored and hosted by Ms. Shusneha Sarkar.
The Hon’ble resource person explained the concepts of Legal Aid, Arbitration, Paralegal Services, Lok Adalat, etc, and also threw light on the aspects of procedures of Mediation, participation of the students in free Legal Aid for helping the needy and the downtrodden masses of the society. These pertinent issues discussed in the lecture has aided the students in gaining better understanding and profound knowledge about DLSA, SLSA, NLSA and also encourage them to participate in further Legal activities.
The Learned Resource Person highlighted the aspects of Legal Services for providing free legal aid, spreading legal awareness, organization of Lok Adalats, Promoting alternative solutions for dispute resolution, to provide compensation to victims of crime, etc.
He also gave a clear picture regarding the following categories who are eligible for free Legal Aid Services like the women and children, member of SC ST, industrial workers, victims of nature calamity like industrial disaster, flood, etc., physically disabled persons, person in custody.
Free legal service is provided for all civil, criminal, revenue, and administrative cases. For which the following legal service organizations have been established to get free legal services
at national level- national legal service authority, at state level- state legal service authority, at district level- district legal service authority, at sub division and taluka level- sub division/ taluka committee legal service authority, at high court level- high court committee legal service authority, at supreme court level- supreme court committee legal service authority.
The session was attended by more than 100 Law students from the department of SLLA from different Courses like B.A.LL.B., B.B.A.LL.B. , LL.B. and LL.M. The session was very interactive and proved to be a successful one. The session ended with a formal vote of thanks to the Chair by Ms. Lovish Minocha.
