Introduction
The School of Fine Arts and Design successfully organized a four-day skill-based Terracotta Sculpture workshop, ‘Matti Ki Abhivyakti,’ from 20th to 24th March 2025. The workshop was conducted in offline mode at NIU Ground, aiming to provide students with hands-on experience in terracotta sculpting, traditional foundry making, and clay baking techniques.
Objective of the Workshop
The primary objective of this workshop was to introduce students to the rich tradition of terracotta art and its contemporary applications. The students learned about 2D and 3D terracotta sculpting, relief work, kiln baking techniques, and foundry making. This workshop also aimed at enhancing their visualization skills, encouraging creative entrepreneurship, and exposing them to indigenous artistic practices.
Workshop Proceedings
The workshop was led by Mr. Nitesh Kumar Kushwaha, an internal expert from the School of Fine Arts, NIU. The sessions were structured to provide a blend of theoretical learning, practical demonstrations, and hands-on experience.
Day 1: 20th March 2025
Morning Session (10:30 AM – 1:00 PM)
- Welcome Address

• Live Demonstration by the Expert
Afternoon Session (2:00 PM – 4:30 PM)
- Students engaged in practical exercises, creating their own sculptures
• Review Session and Interactive Discussion
Day 2 – Day 4: 21st – 24th March 2025 ( 23rd – Sunday)
Morning Session (10:30 AM – 1:00 PM)
- Hands-on Workshop on various terracotta sculpting techniques
• Students practiced shaping and refining their sculptures
Afternoon Session (2:00 PM – 4:30 PM)
- Traditional foundry making and baking techniques were introduced
• Kiln preparation and baking of student artworks
Key Learnings and Outcomes
- Hands-on Skill Development: Students learned about the various stages of terracotta sculpting, from design layout, shaping, and detailing to firing and baking the final artwork.
- Understanding Traditional and Modern Techniques: The workshop provided insights into indigenous terracotta practices and how they can be adapted to contemporary art and design.
- Career Opportunities: Students explored career paths in sculpture, interior design, mural art, and architectural design using terracotta as a medium.
- Practical Exposure: The workshop concluded with an exhibition of the created artworks, allowing students to showcase their skills and receive constructive feedback.
Conclusion
With 91 students actively participating, the workshop successfully enriched their knowledge of terracotta art while strengthening their technical and creative skills. Certificates of participation were awarded to all students, and the event was well received by faculty and attendees alike.
