Introduction:
Political Science plays a crucial role in the preparation of Civil Services examinations such as the UPSC. As an optional subject, it not only aligns well with the General Studies syllabus but also equips students with knowledge of governance, polity, international relations, and Public Administration. To highlight its importance, the School of Liberal Arts organized an expert talk by Dr. Wakeel Ahmad as part of a lecture series. The session aimed at informing and inspiring students to consider Political Science as their optional subject and to understand how deeply the subject is integrated with the themes of civil services.
Objectives:
- To educate students about the relevance of Political Science in Civil Services preparation.
- To encourage students to choose Political Science as their optional subject.
- To bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and administrative application.
- To equip students with strategic approaches to Civil Services exams.
- To highlight how Political Science builds analytical and ethical thinking necessary for public service.
Session Overview:
The subject expert, Dr. Wakeel Ahmed commenced the session by explaining how Political Science directly corresponds with the UPSC syllabus—both in General Studies and in the Optional Paper. He elaborated on topics like governance, international relations, constitutional law, and ethics, and discussed how knowledge in these areas proves vital for aspiring civil servants. He emphasized the interdisciplinary nature of Political Science, explaining how it enhances decision-making, leadership, and communication skills central to civil service roles. The expert further addressed how political theory can be applied in practical administrative scenarios and how current affairs should be analyzed through a political lens. A significant part of the session included an interactive Q&A round where students actively raised queries on strategy, sources, time management, and subject combination. Dr. Ahmed patiently addressed each concern and encouraged students to remain consistent and updated.
Outcome:
The session left students highly motivated and better informed about the roadmap to success in civil services through Political Science. Many students realized that the subject goes beyond textbook knowledge and prepares one for real-life administrative challenges. Students appreciated the practical insights provided by Dr. Ahmed, especially his tips on linking political theories to governance models and international diplomacy. The guidance helped students identify the value of choosing Political Science as an optional subject and inspired many to pursue the civil services path with more clarity and dedication.
