Introduction

The Old Age Home Visit and Geriatric Care Awareness Program was organized by B. Sc 5th semester students under the supervision of Ms. Vinita, Nursing Tutor, School of Nursing on 20/11/2024. The program aimed to raise awareness about the challenges faced by the elderly and to emphasize the importance of geriatric care in improving their quality of life. This initiative brought together healthcare professionals, nursing students, and community members to interact with elderly residents and promote holistic care practices.

Objectives

  1. To understand the living conditions and challenges faced by the elderly residents.
  2. To provide basic health screenings and consultations for the elderly.
  3. To educate the community and caregivers about geriatric care and health promotion.
  4. To create a sense of companionship and emotional support for the residents.

Program Activities

  1. Welcome and Introduction

The program began with an introductory session led by Ms. Vinita, Nursing Tutor, who welcomed the residents and outlined the purpose of the visit.

  1. Interaction with Elderly Residents

Nursing students and healthcare professionals engaged in one-on-one conversations with the residents to understand their health concerns and emotional needs.

  1. Health Check-Up Camp

A health check-up station was set up to measure:

  • Blood pressure
  • Blood sugar levels
  • Body mass index (BMI)
  • Vision and hearing
  1. Geriatric Care Awareness Session

An awareness session on geriatric care was conducted, focusing on:

  • Proper nutrition and hydration for seniors.
  • The importance of mental health and strategies to combat loneliness.
  • Common geriatric health issues and their management, including arthritis, hypertension, and diabetes.
  1. Distribution of Essential Supplies

Residents received care kits, including hygiene essentials, nutritional supplements, and first-aid items.

To create a lively atmosphere, cultural activities such as singing, dancing, and storytelling were organized. Nursing students performed a short skit on “The Role of Family in Geriatric Care.”

Outcomes

  2. Emotional Support: The residents expressed gratitude for the companionship and care shown by the visitors.
