Event Overview:

The School of Nursing successfully celebrated “World Birth Defect Day, World Down Syndrome Day and World Autism Day” on 10th June 2026 at NIIMS Hospital, Pediatric OPD. The event was designed to create awareness about Birth Defects, Down syndrome and autism, their causes, prevention, and management.

Healthcare professionals, faculty members, and students actively participated in the programme, making it a significant initiative toward community health promotion.

Objectives of the Programme:

  • To increase awareness about birth defects and their impact on individuals, families, and communities.
  • To promote the importance of prenatal care, maternal health, nutrition, and preventive healthcare practices.
  • To raise awareness about Down syndrome and the rights of individuals with the condition.
  • To increase public understanding of autism and neurodiversity.
  • To promote acceptance, inclusion, and respect for autistic individuals.
  • To educate communities about the early signs of autism and the benefits of early intervention.

The Chief Patron for the program was Dr. Devesh Kumar Singh, Hon’ble Chairman, NIU. He is an educationist and an academic leader with the vision, belief, value, understanding and work legacy of quality Education.

The Chief Patron for the program was Dr. Vikram Singh, Hon’ble Chancellor, NIU. He is an academic leader with the vision, conviction, appreciation, knowledge, and a legacy of high-quality work in education.

The Patron for the Program was Prof. (Dr.) Uma Bhardwaj, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor,

NIU. She is a leader in higher education with the vision, conviction, appreciation, knowledge,

and work ethic of great education.

Prof. (Dr.) Tanveer Ahmad Wani, Dean – Quality Assurance & Accreditation, NIU. His vision for the Quality Assurance & Accreditation cell is to establish a culture of quality, accountability, and continuous improvement across all university academic and administrative processes.

Prof. (Dr.) Dipak Sethi, Director, School of Nursing, as the Convenor. He guided and

encouraged us throughout our program.

Programme Highlights:

  • World Birth defects day, World Down syndrome day & World Autism Day:
    • Conducted under the supervision of NIIMS Hospital doctors and nursing staff.
    • Included Parents of children’s students, faculty, and hospital staff.
    • Sessions covered causes, signs and symptoms and preventive strategies.
    • Interactive Q&A sessions encouraged participants to clarify doubts.
    • Early identification and intervention can improve developmental outcomes.
    • Acceptance and understanding are as important as awareness.

Participation:

  • Nursing students, faculty, hospital staff, and community members actively took part.
  • Total participation: 35

Outcomes of the Event:

  1. Early detection and intervention.
  2. Enhanced Community Support: Greater community involvement and support for individuals with birth defects, Down syndrome, and autism.
  3. Empowerment of students and community members to contribute actively in healthcare.
  4. Positive feedback highlighting the importance of such health-oriented programmes.

Conclusion:

The observance of Birth Defects Awareness, Down Syndrome Awareness, and Autism Awareness serves as an important opportunity to educate communities, promote acceptance, and strengthen support for affected individuals and their families. Through increased awareness and understanding, misconceptions can be reduced, early identification and intervention can be encouraged, and inclusive practices can be promoted. The event reinforces the message that every individual, regardless of their abilities or differences, deserves respect, equal opportunities, and the chance to reach their full potential. By working together, we can create a more compassionate, supportive, and inclusive society for all.
